The Talon https://ohstalon.com The Student News Site of Osbourn High School Wed, 11 Mar 2020 12:44:42 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.4.2 Mac Miller’s “Good News” Review https://ohstalon.com/923/opinion/mac-millers-good-news-review/ https://ohstalon.com/923/opinion/mac-millers-good-news-review/#respond Wed, 11 Mar 2020 12:44:42 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=923 Peaking at number 3 on US Billboard 200; “Good News” by Mac Miller was a single to his last studio album due to dying by an accidental overdose. The single “Good News” was released on January 9th with a music video accompanying it. The song itself was spectacular surpassing my expectations. Miller has always been open with his drug use and depression; in his last album Swimming he touched deeply in on his depression. There’s really a lot of emotion in the single and the previous album rapping and singing about his thoughts and use. Mac Miller has been known for his talented and warm singing voice and can be shown in The Divine Feminine.

In “Good News”, however, his singing really puts more empathy on the words and giving it a deeper meaning. His vocals perfectly match the flow of the instrumental being welcoming and displaying a great deal of gentle nature. Miller’s single truly showed he had a deeper connection with his mental illness to his music. Hearing Miller wrestle with his dark thoughts within his single is excruciatingly painful to understand. At the same time, however, it’s also beautiful because there’s a balance of deep lyrics and instrumental sound giving the tone a warm feeling.

In which Jon Brion’s producer skills really made the tone more lighthearted and a dream like quality. Jon Brion who worked with most known artist Fiona Apple and Kanye West as a producer knew what he was planning on doing while working on the single. Jon Brion and Mac Miller previously were working together on the Circles album before Miller’s overdose and it really shows that Brion pulled a ton of weight to complete the album properly. The instrumental really wasn’t amazingly master or produced but, doesn’t sound not low quality lo-fi, it was a perfect balance in which made the song unique and reflected Miller’s work.

I was really attracted to “Good News” due to the significance of the lyrics that portrayed how Miller was optimistic for his future. Miller was reflecting throughout the song and knew he wanted to get better is achievable. The lyrics reflect so much to Miller’s personality as an artist, with being isolated and finding a way to belong. This can be portrayed in this verse,

“Haven’t seen the sun in awhile, but I heard that the sky is blue… Yeah, I heard they don’t talk about me too much no more… And that’s the problem with a closed door.”

It’s no doubt that Miller had always a deeper meaning in every studio album he made, making his style more unique and less common to find. Overall “Good News” lyrics, Miller’s singing, and tone is so strong that it effectively portrays Miller’s pain and thoughts in a way that really hits you.

The Highs and Lows of Haikyu https://ohstalon.com/921/opinion/the-highs-and-lows-of-haikyu/ https://ohstalon.com/921/opinion/the-highs-and-lows-of-haikyu/#respond Wed, 11 Mar 2020 12:37:50 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=921 As an enthusiast in the anime community, there is no doubt I would not hear the rave around the anime Haikyu. If you do not know, Haikyu is an anime that follows the main character Shoyo Hinata and his adventure in having a sudden love for volleyball after watching the national championship on television and joining the volleyball team in his High School.

To my surprise, the anime had four seasons as I had thought the anime was new, considering all the recent fame surrounding it. A reason I think this is due to season 3 coming out in 2016, and season 4(finally) coming out until this year. This is something that is commonly seen in the anime world as many producers push back release dates for years. This phenomenon reminded me of the anime “Attack on Titan” which did this exact move.

Although I may not have watched the entire show, from what I have seen I am quite excited to see what the show will bring. I usually am not a fan of sports anime, as I tend to find myself either not finishing it or just not interesting. As expected, I thought this anime was going to follow the typical protagonist vs. antagonist storyline as it is a sports anime, which tend to be more intense.

It took me by surprise to see both Shoyo and “enemy” Tobio Kageyama end up on the same team in High School after the encounter they had in Middle School. The story follows an interesting take on the ‘frenemies’ storyline as most would expect Shoyo and Tobio to be absolute enemies as both are striving to the best on the court. Overall, I am very excited to see the new and refreshing elements this anime will bring and how it will leave the audience on their toes.

Fighting for Food https://ohstalon.com/916/opinion/fighting-for-food/ https://ohstalon.com/916/opinion/fighting-for-food/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2020 15:11:34 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=916 School lunch is a constant topic of discussion for many students throughout the school. Although some find the food to be fine there are others who believe that it can be improved with a few fresh ideas.

Senior Laura Skaggs believes it might be hard to improve due to the amount of food the school must produce for its 2000+ students.

“School food is about a 6-7  [out of 10]. it’s hard to mass-produce food,” Skaggs said.

Some students bring food from home because the can’t eat or buy school food so they have to use the microwaves.

Junior Maddie Warren believes that adding more would encourage students to bring their own food.

“To fix the microwave problem she would add more and newer microwaves,” Warren said.

Some students really like school food but think it could use a small change.

“They should let us bring outside food in by are parents as long as they check the bag,” sophomore Nalin Theodore said.

“If I could change the menu I would put homemade pasta, ” junior Jasmine Johnson said

Levels of Pep https://ohstalon.com/912/sports/levels-of-pep/ https://ohstalon.com/912/sports/levels-of-pep/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 20:02:56 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=912 Cheerleading is a way to encourage one’s team to do better or proceed with the great work, and most believe that its all the same as you chant words and do a few moves here and there. Except cheerleading is more than that, and as age progresses the difficulty does as well.

Osbourn Highschool partakes in this sport as well as the middle school across the street, and though the two schools have similar cheers, their preparations, practices, and routines are different.

Osbourn Highschool’s cheer team practices Monday through Friday from 4 pm to 6:30 pm. In these practices, stunts are reviewed and learned and knew cheers are contributed by members of the squad. This allows for more personality to be shown when cheerleaders perform at games.

On the other hand, the middle schools cheer team practices every Monday and Tuesday after school usually until 4:30 pm, and since the members are a bit younger they don’t get to come up with chants like the high schoolers do, that’s usually left up to their coaches who every now and then lets them chime in, and that’s one of the reasons the two schools are different.

“In my opinion, High school cheer is more difficult as we condition and practice more,” said sophomore Tein Tran.

“Highschool cheer is a lot more complex than middle school cheer just because we don’t get to do as much,” said 7th grader Aria Smith.

Not only does the fact of who creates the cheer chants separate the two schools, but the fact that Osbourn participates in cheer competitions, have longer practices, and practice more consistently also create a barrier as well.

The Impeachment Process https://ohstalon.com/910/features/the-impeachment-process/ https://ohstalon.com/910/features/the-impeachment-process/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 19:59:52 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=910 We are all aware that President Trump has undergone the daunting impeachment process, but what exactly does the impeachment process entitle? We will go through the impeachment process of the president step-by-step.

  • Impeachment inquiry is opened

Any member of the House of Representatives may open an inquiry, beginning the impeachment process and assigning committees to investigate. In Trump’s case, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened the inquiry, assigning five committees.

  • Voted on by the House Judiciary Committee

Evidence of wrongdoing is gathered by the assigned committees and voted on their legitimacy by the Judiciary Committee. Passed with a simple majority vote.

  • The House of Representatives votes

A debate is held regarding which articles (evidence) are valid for grounds of impeachment. A simple majority vote passes the proceedings.

  • Charges are passed on to the Senate

The Senate is the only body with the power to remove the president from office.

  • The trial

Held in the Senate and overseen by the Chief Justice. Members of the House Judiciary Committee serve as prosecutors, the Senate the jury. The president may choose his own defense attorneys.

  • Jury deliberates

Members from the Senate deliberate in private.

  • The decision

3 possible outcomes; guilty if voted on by a  ⅔ majority of the jury, acquitted (found innocent) otherwise, given censure (minor punishment) if guilty for something minor. President Trump was found acquitted.

  • If guilty

The president is removed from office immediately and is given no chance for appeal.

Thoughts about Scheduling Changes for 2021 https://ohstalon.com/907/opinion/thoughts-about-scheduling-changes-for-2021/ https://ohstalon.com/907/opinion/thoughts-about-scheduling-changes-for-2021/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 19:37:17 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=907 The school system is listening to the students and teachers allowing them to state an opinion on whether next year we should have seven periods or just keep it at eight periods. There are pros and cons to both of these ideas. Students are basing their opinions on how it can help everyone.

“[I prefer the] seven block, because it gives room for studying,” said freshman Sebastian Steinbach.

“ I would like to go to the seven class,” said history and government teacher Jessica Yankovitz.

Some prefer the seven periods while others prefer to keep it the same.

“I prefer the scheduling that we have now because I feel like it’s a better fit and it gives us more time in school to be productive,” said junior Destiny Taylor.

“I find the current schedule has more advantages in terms of getting work done,” said sophomore Amanda Hurley.

Many kids think that having an extra period for studying is not beneficial.

“I think that the schedule we have now is going to be better off because we aren’t going to have this extra class to do nothing… Like kids don’t advantage of the ELT time that we have now, would they really take advantage of it if we had more of it,” said Taylor. Next year if there are seven periods instead of eight periods this could possibly be beneficial towards extracurriculars, as to more students joining.

“Maybe [the seven periods would help], because then they would have a dedicated hour for studying that way they wouldn’t have to worry about getting home and doing their homework, said Steinbach.

While others think that it will make no change.

“I don’t know, I think if you aren’t doing after-school activities with this schedule a new schedule won’t make you want to do more after-school activities,” said Hurley.

The schedule change also affects teachers with planning and grading.

“[The seven-period schedule] tends to have a bit of help because there is a block dedicated for that 7, there is one less class grading for,” said economics and accounting teacher Bryant Cornetta.

“I think it will allow teachers more time for activities like planning and grading,” said Yankovitz. Teachers also think about how it will affect the students as well.

“[It will help students because] they don’t have to have all 8 classes, they have to focus on the classes that they do have,” said Cornetta.

“ I think 8 classes is hard, especially those who are taking more advanced classes, and I think it still leaves plenty of room for all graduation requirements,” said Yankovitz. Whatever happens next year with the schedule change, will hopefully not be a struggle for students and teachers.

How the Swim Team Flows https://ohstalon.com/904/sports/how-the-swim-team-flows/ https://ohstalon.com/904/sports/how-the-swim-team-flows/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 19:29:04 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=904 Swimming is a sport that involves a lot of cardio resistance. Some events require more cardio than others which requires more preparation. The swim team practices from Monday through Thursday to prepare for the upcoming swim meets where other events take place. What keeps some of these athletes motivated is commitment and wanting to be the very best at the sport.

“I am motivated by wanting to be the best at what I do, so that pushes me to be healthier, I like staying in shape and working a lot on my cardio, ” said Austin Oakley, 11.

Practices take place at the Freedom center where the swim team practices after school working on their different types of sets that differ through each practice.

“One of my favorite sets is 100 back because it is the stroke that I am the best at so I enjoy it over some of the other strokes,” said Erika Stewart, 10.

Practices tend to be really long and tiring to get the team prepared for the meets where they face off other schools to see who can get the best time

“Practices are really long and tiring and they are usually 3000 meters of swimming, which helps on bettering your cardio,” said Stewart.

A big part of the team are the coaches who always push the team to their limits for greater improvement at the swim meets and practices.

“The coaches are nice and very understanding,” said Ally Hudson, 10.

Lastly where all the hard work pays off is at swim meets where other schools including OHS gather and compete to see who can add up the best times to gain the most amount of points.

Presidential Crisis https://ohstalon.com/902/news/presidential-crisis/ https://ohstalon.com/902/news/presidential-crisis/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2020 16:20:00 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=902 In the history of the United States of America, only two presidents have been impeached. Andrew Johnson, 17th President, was impeached for political conflicts. 42nd President Bill Clinton was impeached after committing perjury, which is lying under oath. Now, another President has faced impeachment and is currently under review for his wrong doings.

Donald Trump is the 3rd President in US history to be impeached. He is under investigation after a whistleblower (a person who informs on a person or organization engaged in an illicit activity.) Allegedly the President might have abused his powers to withhold any military aid to pressure Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. In addition, also to investigate the conspiracy theory that Ukraine was behind interference in the 2016 US presidential election. There was also a call between the two presidents. President Trump was congratulating Volodymyr Zelenskyy on becoming the new president of Ukraine. A rough transcript of the conversation between the two presidents can be found on the CNN Politics website.

“I think you will do a great job. I have many friends in the Ukraine who know you and like you,” Trump said during the call between him and Zelenskyy.

Shortly after, Trump faces his trials. Currently, the trials have reached their third day. On the first day of the impeachment hearing, the House of Representatives opened up their public impeachment hearings against President Trump. On day two, the US Senate opened their arguments on removing the President from office. Representative Adam Schiff, who is also the lead prosecutor, told senators they need to remove Trump from office because “he’s shown he’s ready and willing to cheat in the 2020 election.

“The President’s misconduct cannot be decided at the ballot box because we cannot be assured the vote will be fairly won,” Schiff told the Senate.

On day three of the trials, Schiff made it clear that in the US rights matter and that the president does not act in the best interest of the country, but only in the best interest of himself. The Democrats continue to present their case to the Republicans, but the opposition party demands witnesses, requesting that they call Joe and Hunter Biden, two persons of interest. The Republicans also demand to hear from the defense because they claim the American people are only hearing one side of the story, and that it’s time to hear the full coverage. Two days later, reaching day five of the impeachment, which took place last Saturday, Trump’s defense team began their case against his conviction and removal. On the seventh day, Trump and his defense wrapped up their arguments before the US Senate began their inquiries. More information about the impeachment trial will be provided soon.

Shooting at Denny’s https://ohstalon.com/899/uncategorized/dead-at-dennys/ https://ohstalon.com/899/uncategorized/dead-at-dennys/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2020 16:04:53 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=899 On December 26 two men entered the Denny’s in Manassas. They shot and killed a food delivery driver and injured another customer eating there.

“It’s kind of scary because it is in our area, it made me pretty upset that it happened where I grew up,” said senior Alishea Landsdown.

Police said that the pair entered the restaurant around 2:25am and demanded money, cell phones, and wallets from employees and customers at the restaurant. As they fled they shot two men.

“The shooting at Denny’s made me feel very scared because I used to go eat there a lot and now I don’t,“ said sophomore Darwin Posada Constanza.

Based on the evidence collected at the scene, detectives identified the gunman as Jordan Anderson. He was charged with one count of murder, one count of malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony.

“I’m not scared because I know that no matter where you go there is a chance that something like that could happen, but I do have my guard up more when I am in public,” said Landsdown.

The second robbery suspect Ryan Thomas Walker, age 22, was taken into custody. Walker is charged with one count of murder, one count of malicious wounding, and one count of robbery.

“I’ve been noticing mass shootings more, maybe because I pay more attention to the media,“ said Landsdown.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help Ozgur’s family with his funeral, memorial, and other family expenses.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/yusuf-ozgur-killed-during-denny039s-robbery-manassas

“Honestly I’m not really scared to go out and eat but I feel like restaurants are going to be more cautious and upgrade their cameras because everyone got freaked out,” said senior Emily Leyva Ramirez.

The End of The Saga https://ohstalon.com/897/opinion/the-end-of-the-saga/ https://ohstalon.com/897/opinion/the-end-of-the-saga/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2020 15:51:46 +0000 https://ohstalon.com/?p=897 The first movie of the Star Wars saga was ‘A New Hope’ in 1977. The order of the movies can be a bit confusing due to the prequel part of it all but once you watch all the movies in order they come together nicely. The Star Wars story line can be quite confusing to those who have not seen the movies from the beginning. It has many plot twists and characters to get to know but as you get to know them they grow on you. There have been a total of nine episodes.

The Rise of Skywalker was the end of this long journey for it’s director and actors. In an interview, George Lucas explains how challenging it was to create the film and bring the  amazing series to a pleasing end for all. In the beginning of The Rise of Skywalker, the plot seems to be how it always is, the Rebellion fighting for peace in the galaxy and the New Order being against them wanting full control. Their leader, Kylo Ren has always been a very fiery character. In ‘The Last Jedi’ episode eight, Kylo Ren’s past and personality is explained to the viewers.

It gives us a better understanding of why he turned out how he did. In The Rise of Skywalker they steered Kylo Ren away from all of his anger. I believe they did this in a very good way. They used his connection with Rey and of course she is always wanting to do the right thing. Kylo and Rey really come together in this last film, even sharing a kiss towards the very end, which definitely did not surprise the viewers. Kylo and Rey’s feelings towards each other became very clear in ‘The Last Jedi’ when they share a connection on the planet Ahch-To where Luke Skywalker was found.

Although that was quite a nice plot twist, the biggest plot twist was the fact that Emperor Palpatine was still alive. Fans saw it coming and many posted videos on YouTube explaining how it was going to go down. Many also speculated Rey’s relation to Palpatine. It turned out that she in fact was his granddaughter which gave her her force sensitivity and lightning power. Rey was not happy to have found this out but she stuck to her morals and didn’t follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. Her character is a natural warrior and it is exciting to watch a female be this powerful.

There were many parts of the film that definitely made fans emotional since it was the end of years of hard work and dedication. Knowing all the characters and their stories really makes the series near and dear to the heart. The actors perform their roles so naturally, as if they really are meant to be their character. In The Rise of Skywalker the original story line characters come to an end. Princess Leia passes away, along with her son Kylo Ren who she gave her life for. The last of the original crew are Chewbacca, C-3P0, and R2. It was heartbreaking to watch the Skywalker legacy die off. Despite the tragedy, the movie ended in a huge celebration. The Rebellion finally got their victory.

I definitely enjoyed the film and all of it’s plot twists but I do feel as if it was a bit messy. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to bring the legacy to an end, which is why I am understanding about it. But the movie did have way too much going on. It seemed as if it was being cramped together. In my opinion they could have definitely split it into two films. Despite that I would still recommend The Rise of Skywalker, as well as watch
